While doing research for my Dakar preview article I ran into a snippet about Omar bin Laden, Osama bin Laden's son. Omar was/is critical of his father and al-Qaeda's attacks, he left Afghanistan in 2000 and never communicated with his father after he left. In 2008 when the Dakar was cancelled Omar attempted to found a marathon "horse race for peace" across Northern Africa, with sponsors' money going to support child victims of the war. Omar said "I heard the rally was stopped because of al-Qeida. I don't think al-Qaeda is going to stop me." The race has been stopped indefinitely by PETA.

After reading about him a bit I actually feel bad for Omar. Despite never talking after leaving Afghanistan he still loves Osama because that's his dad, that's the man who raised him. But at the same time he hates the attacks and even feels guilty about them even though he had nothing whatsoever to do with them. What he wants more than anything is peace between the different faiths and to try to help make that peace possible. A hard goal to achieve when you have one of the most hated last names in the world. It's a pretty sucky situation.

Not to mention thst the mainstream media has swept him under the rug. I would have never known Osama had a son who just wants peace.
